Framed vs. Frameless Cabinets: What's the Difference and Which Should You Choose?
Understanding Cabinet Construction
Before you choose a door style or finish, there's a more fundamental decision to make: framed or frameless construction. This choice affects the look, storage capacity, cost, and installation of your cabinets.
Let's break down the differences so you can make an informed decision.
Framed Cabinets: The American Standard
Framed cabinets have a solid wood face frame attached to the front of the cabinet box. The doors and drawers are mounted to this frame.
**Advantages:** - Stronger structural support — the frame adds rigidity - More forgiving during installation (the frame hides small gaps) - Works with all door styles (overlay, inset, partial overlay) - Traditional American look that most homeowners are familiar with - Generally less expensive than frameless
**Considerations:** - The frame reduces the interior opening by about 1.5" on each side - Slightly less accessible storage space - The visible frame creates a more traditional aesthetic
Frameless Cabinets: The European Approach
Frameless (also called European-style) cabinets have no face frame. The doors attach directly to the cabinet box sides using concealed hinges.
**Advantages:** - Full access to the cabinet interior — no frame blocking the opening - Sleek, modern appearance with minimal gaps between doors - More usable storage space per cabinet - Clean, contemporary lines that define modern kitchen design - Doors and drawers cover the entire front of the cabinet
**Considerations:** - Requires more precise installation (no frame to hide imperfections) - Typically costs 10-15% more than framed - Relies on thicker cabinet box sides (usually 3/4") for structural integrity
Which Should You Choose?
**Choose framed if:** - You prefer a traditional or transitional kitchen style - You want the widest range of door style options - Budget is a primary concern - Your walls aren't perfectly plumb (the frame is more forgiving)
**Choose frameless if:** - You want a modern, European-inspired kitchen - Maximizing storage space is a priority - You prefer clean lines with minimal gaps between doors - You're building new or have well-prepared walls
